Very real charges for fake kidnap

Police have charged five men alleged to have staged the fake kidnapping of a man and posted footage of his phony escape on YouTube.

Late last year, a witness reported to police that they had seen a near-naked, handcuffed man escape from the boot of a stationary vehicle and run into nearby bush while being chased by another man in Leederville.

The incident happened on Vincent Street, near the Mitchell Freeway overpass, about 1.20pm on September 18.

It will be alleged it was a planned hoax by five men, who recorded the prank and edited the footage before they uploaded it to one of their YouTube accounts.

It is understood the video was one of several pranks the men have posted on the video sharing website.

Detectives first called for witnesses to the incident on September 19 after they received the report of a thin, fair-skinned male aged about 14 rolling out the back of a white-coloured ute or hatch vehicle.

A 25-year-old Balcatta man, a 23-year-old Shenton Park man, a 22-year-old West Leederville man, a 21-year-old Wembley man and a 21-year-old Carine man have been charged with creating a false belief.

They are set to appear in Perth Magistrate's Court on March 5.
