Update, 5.35pm: Karrakup residents are being urged to evacuate due to an out of control bushfire in the area.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services this evening downgraded an emergency warning for people in the southern part of Karrakup in Perth's south east to a 'watch and act'.

The warning applies to people in an area bounded by Hella Kipper Drive, Nettleton Road and Manjedal Road.

DFES had warned the fire would impact homes within an hour but fire crews, including 60 firefighters, have slowed the spread of the fire.

However, the Department says the fire is out of control and unpredictable and there is still a possible threat to lives and homes.

People in the area are being urged to leave if the way is clear and put bushfire plans into action.

The fire started between South Western Highway and Norman Road in Cardup and was reported at 3.19pm. The blaze has already burnt 28 hectares and is heading in a north-easterly direction towards Nettleton Road.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Two helitacs, a helicopter, four fixed wing waterbombers, an aircrane and 60 fire fighters are at the scene. Two of the Department of Environment and Conservation's bulldozers and a front end loader are also at the scene.
