Rewards are on offer for information that leads to the arrest of an arsonist who lit a series of fires, one of which threatened homes, in Northam yesterday.

Between 4pm and 4.45pm, at least six scrub fires were reported around Great Eastern Highway.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has deemed the fires suspicious.

Firefighters were kept busy into the night as the flames threatened homes and forced road closures.

People were urged to evacuate or prepare to defend their homes, before crews brought the situation under control last night.

One fire burned through 30 hectares of bushland opposite the Yongah Hill Immigration Detention Centre.

No asylum seekers had to be evacuated.

Arson Squad investigators travelled to Northam today to help Wheatbelt detectives with investigations.

They would like to speak to any witnesses, especially anyone who saw a black motorcycle in the area.

Rewards of up to $50,000 are available through the Insurance Council of Australia’s Arson Reward Scheme.

Those with information are being asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
