A high-profile Albany businessman accused of plotting to have someone kill a woman in the Great Southern city will apply for release on bail next month.

Brian Vincent Attwell, 72, has been in custody since September last year after being charged with the rare count of attempting to procure the commission of murder.

The identity of his alleged victim is suppressed after the court ruled that publication would jeopardise Mr Attwell's right to a fair trial.

Mr Attwell faced Stirling Gardens Magistrate's Court today via video link from Albany Regional Prison. His lawyer told the court Mr Attwell would be applying for bail.

The court has previously been told the rumour mill in Albany was in overdrive over the allegation.

Mr Attwell's bail application was adjourned to February 13.
