The Perth Wildcats will wind back the clock by donning yellow and black uniforms for the game against Cairns at Perth Arena tonight as part of the NBL Heritage Round.

The one-off uniforms will be worn in honour of the original Westate Wildcats, as they were then known, and are replicas of those worn during the club's formative years from 1982.

The uniforms feature the original Westate Wildcats logo and have been given the tick of approval by the current players.

Managing director Nick Marvin said the decision to wear replicas of the club's first uniform was a tribute to people such as the Ellis family, who fought for the club's inclusion in the fledgling NBL competition when the Eastern States basketball establishment didn't want them.

"We wouldn't exist if it wasn't for those pioneers, who decided to put what little resources they had into the club and put their lives on hold to put a team in the NBL," Mr Marvin said. "It's our identity and it's respect for those people. They weren't professional back then, they did it for the love of the State and the game of basketball. Yellow and black are the colours of our State."

The Wildcats are celebrating their 30th anniversary this season with a range of initiatives, including a tribute match against Wollongong on February 3.

Every member of the original Wildcats team will be present, along with former players who became household names in the 1990s such as James Crawford, Ricky Grace and Andrew Vlahov.
