A 38-year-old Belmont woman has been charged over the assault of a security guard in Rivervale last night.

Police say about 6.30pm they received calls about a woman on Kooyong Road allegedly walking in front of traffic, throwing sticks and swinging tree branches at passing cars.

The woman also reportedly smashed someone's windscreen.

City of Belmont security officers detained the woman until the police arrived but she allegedly assaulted one of them with a stick. The security officer required medical attention for a cut to his arm.

Police took the woman back to the station where she allegedly spat on a police officer.

She has been charged with criminal damaged, assaulting a public officer and assault occasioning bodily harm.

She will appear in Perth Magistrate's Court today.
