WA man survives Bali stabbing

A Perth man stabbed repeatedly at his Bali home threw a thug through a window before a second intruder attacked him as he fought desperately to protect his family.

Paul Gill, his wife Jacqui and their two young girls were in their Canggu villa about 2.30am yesterday when Mr Gill confronted the first burglar.

Mr Gill, 42, was in a stable condition in Bali International Medical Centre last night after surgery for multiple stab wounds.

A staff member at the villa complex told The Weekend West Mr Gill wrestled with one intruder and threw him through a window before the other man stabbed him.

The luxury cruise boat captain was wounded in the chest and neck.

A Perth family of four who are close friends of the Gills, who moved to Bali six months ago, were in the villa at the time.

Colin, who did not want to use his surname, said his son, daughter-in-law and two granddaughters were staying with the Gills while on holiday in Bali.

Colin said he heard the news when he called his son yesterday.

“My granddaughters were sleeping downstairs so when my son and his wife heard the screams, they rushed there,” he said.

“When they discovered the screams were coming from upstairs, they went up and saw blood everywhere. Paul had been stabbed four times in the back.

“He caught one guy but didn’t know there was another who came up from behind and stabbed him. The family are really shaken but they’re OK.”

Colin said his relatives had moved to a hotel.

NSW woman Ngaire Howard posted on Facebook that she stayed with the Gills in recent days and they had to change the locks on the villa after being robbed late last month.

“Such shocking and terrible news,” she wrote. “We hope and pray that Paul being a strong healthy man makes a full recovery.”

Other friends said Mr Gill was a fit, strong man with a martial arts blackbelt and was a keen surfer.

Hospital spokeswoman Herlia Adisasmita said Mr Gill had wounds to his chest and neck, all from a knife.

Doctors stabilised him in surgery but it was not known how long he would be in hospital.

A man who rents the villa next door, but did not want to be named, told the Sydney Morning Herald the second robber stabbed Mr Gill.

North Kuta police chief Aldi Alfa told Fairfax it was “one against two”.

“If not, he might have been able to put up a fight,” Chief Alfa said.

The witness helped alert police and medics.

A Department of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman said the Australian Consul-General in Bali was making urgent inquiries.

“At present, no requests for consular assistance regarding this case have been received,” she said.

Mr Gill and his family are believed to be living at Villa Chloe in Canggu, on the south-west coast of Bali, about 10km from Kuta.

The luxury four-bedroom beachside villa has a pool, spa bath and its own staff. It is near the resort where Queensland woman Denni North, 33, was found dead in a pool.

Bali police say there is nothing suspicious about her death.
