People near Esperance are being urged to brace for severe thunderstorms expected this evening.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned of damaging winds and heavy rainfall expected for the South East Coastal district.

People south of a line from Hopetoun to Lake King to Norseman to Balladonia, including those in or near Esperance are being encouraged to prepare for the storms.

The Bureau says the rainfall could lead to flash flooding and the storms could cause damage to homes and property.

"The overall weather pattern is not unusual for this time of year but severe weather may occur in some parts of the warning area," the Bureau said.

People in the area are being encouraged to find shelter away from trees, power lines, storm water drains and streams, close curtains and blinds and stay indoors away from windows.

People are also being urged to unplug electrical appliances and take care on the roads.
