Neighbours of a two-year-old boy allegedly murdered in Bassendean say they heard screams coming from the home and tried to resuscitate the toddler.
Wayne Murray Narkle, 22, has been charged with murder over the death of the boy, who is not named for cultural reasons. Mr Narkle appeared in Perth Magistrate's Court yesterday.
Police were called to Swan District Hospital about 10.45pm on Sunday after the toddler was taken there by St John Ambulance officers. The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Further inquiries led them to a unit on Station Street, which is in a complex of 14 two-storey public housing units in a cul-de-sac facing the Midland train line.
It is believed the boy's mother, Kerry Bodney, had gone out for a short time and left him in the care of the accused murderer.
She reportedly returned home to find her son unconscious and ran to a neighbouring property for help. It remains unclear how the boy died.
Neighbour David Wilson told Seven News the mother banged on his door and begged for help.
Mr Wilson tried to administer CPR before an ambulance arrived. "I ran down and he was just lying there," he said.
Cassy Jones, who lives in a unit in the complex, said she heard screams and yelling and had noticed shouting coming from the property in previous days.
"I could hear them screaming. I just thought it was some drunken fights," she said.
Dozens of tributes were posted on Facebook yesterday.
"My deepest thoughts and prayers go out to Kerry Bodney on the horrible loss of her baby boy . . . I wouldn't wish her pain on anybody. RIP baby boy," Emma Logan wrote.
Another Facebook user wrote: "My heart goes out to Kerry Bodney on the horrible loss of her little boy, words cannot explain how she is feeling. May He Rest In Peace Beautiful Little Soul."
"So sad at this time that your beautiful lil boy left so soon. Stay strong," Shauna Merle Hansen posted.
The mother wrote of her devotion for her son on Facebook as recently as Saturday.
"My son's the only one in my heart, the rest is empty," she wrote.
Mr Narkle was not required to plead and was remanded in custody to appear in Stirling Magistrate's Court on January 30.
