Christmas Pageant lights up the streets

The Channel Seven and The West Australian Christmas Pageant lit up the streets of Perth last night with a colourful array of new floats and lights.

The popular event this year returned to an evening timeslot after being staged on Sundays mornings for the past four years.

Perth's 41st annual pageant, supported by Lotterywest and the City of Perth, kicked off at 7.30pm at St Georges Terrace and finished at Langley Park, preceded by a free afternoon carnival in Forrest Place.

Families converged on the city streets to be part of the Christmas magic and catch a glimpse of Santa on his sleigh.

A record 71 groups took part in the event, including dancers, bands, clowns and the ever-popular Fat Cat.

The pageant depicted Santa’s journey from the North Pole to Perth. Highlights included the superhero-themed Captain Christmas Pageant float and a giant gold candelabra and inflatable soldier inspired by Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker.

Extended trading coincided with the event.
