Border protection authorities have intercepted a boat carrying 87 suspected asylum seekers near the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

Customs boat Triton intercepted the boat yesterday.

Those on board the boat were transferred to the Cocos Islands for basic health and security checks. They will be transferred to Christmas Island for further checks.

The federal Government has warned people arriving by boat without a visa after August 13 risk being transferred to Nauru or Manus Island under its new offshore processing arrangements.
