Update, 5.45pm: A 36-year-old man is in custody after the discovery of a woman's body in Meekatharra overnight.

The woman was found about midnight in a laneway at the northern end of the town.

Her death is being treated as a suspected homicide.

Police said the man was assisting Major Crime Squad Detectives with their investigation.

The woman has not yet been identified.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Any members of the local Meekatharra community able to assist with the investigation are asked to attend the police station.
