Dawn service to mark Bali bombings in WA

The 10th anniversary of the 2002 Bali bombings will be marked in Perth with a dawn service at a memorial dedicated to the 16 West Australian victims.

The memorial at the city's central Kings Park was built so the dawn light on October 12 shines on a plaque bearing the names of the locals who lost their lives in the terrorist attack.

Premier Colin Barnett will attend the event, which is being co-ordinated by the Bali Peace Park Association.

The following day, the Burns Challenge Ball fundraiser will be held by the Fiona Wood Foundation.

Teams of elite athletes will compete in extreme sporting challenges throughout the night, including cricket great Justin Langer, rugby star Scott Staniforth, world number one marathon swimming champion Shelley Taylor-Smith and artistic gymnast Lauren Mitchell, who has just returned from the 2012 Olympics in London.

While the event is black tie, attendees are asked to don sneakers in keeping with the health and fitness theme of the event.

Dr Wood, the burns expert and 2005 Australian of the Year who treated many of the bombing survivors, urged people to attend as funds would go to burns injury research.
