Ambitious marina still on the cards
Greg Poland.

The audacious plan for a $10 billion marina in Fremantle is not dead, with the key proponent claiming he will try again.

Greg Poland, head of the Strzelecki Group leading the consortium, said he would seek to restart the approval process under the next State government.

The Barnett Government failed in 2009 to support the group's vision for a marina, including six islands behind a 3.5km breakwater, creating homes for 20,000 people, 100,000sqm of office space, schools, 2200 boat pens, a performing arts centre, a five-star hotel and beaches.

Former Labor premier Alan Carpenter was vehemently opposed to the marina but Mr Poland said yesterday that the vision had strong support. "I will try again, I don't go away," he said. "That project would have put Perth on the map. It would have given us the wow factor."

He said the State Government was unduly focused on the resources sector.
