A Perth teenager had a 16th birthday he will never forget after he and his dad encountered a "massive" 4m great white shark off Trigg yesterday.
Reef Dunn's dad Brett said the pair were fishing for pink snapper and samson about 3km offshore in the morning when the shark appeared.
"All of a sudden the beast popped up beside the boat and just circled us about five or six times," Mr Dunn said.
"I've got an underwater camera on a pole so I put it under and got some footage of it but he kept coming into the camera to have a go at it. He hung around for a while and then I thought it was time to pull up anchor and get out of there."
Mr Dunn said the shark was almost as big as their 6.4m aluminium boat and at first he thought it was a minke whale.
"This thing was huge, absolutely huge," he said. "To see the size of them is just frightening."
Mr Dunn said while the encounter was scary it was "just an incredible experience" and a birthday present his son would never forget.
"I've been fishing for 25 years off the Perth coast and never, ever seen one, always dreamt of seeing one and today was the day," he said.
"You could have reached out and touched it, that's how close it was. It just kept coming under the boat and coming around behind the motors.
"It was just an amazing experience, something I'll never forget for the rest of my life."
Shark sightings should be reported to water police on 9442 8600.
