Broome Guide: local knowledge

Sunset at Cable Beach. Picture: Gemma Nisbet

Think of Broome and what comes to mind? Perhaps it’s the contrast of the red pindan earth and the brilliant blue ocean, or the rich history of the pearling industry and its multicultural workers. Maybe it’s the long, white sweep of Cable Beach, or the sunset viewed from the red rocks at Gantheaume Point, or the area’s ancient Aboriginal culture. It could be the fun of heading out on a fishing charter, the laid-back sophistication of the town’s restaurants and resorts, or simply sitting outside enjoying the warm evening breeze.

For me, it’s the masses of fuchsia, bougainvillea and white frangipanis. Exploring the mangroves at Roebuck Bay at low tide. A gecko crawling across the screen during a film at Sun Pictures. The corrugated metal houses with no gutters. The little rock dragons. Matso’s Ginger Beer. For you, Broome might mean something else entirely.

And who better to show us around town — to recommend places to go and things to do — than the people who know Broome best, because they live there. From long-time residents to those who were born and raised here, they share their take on Broome, and what they love about it, to provide a portrait of a place through local eyes.

Gemma Nisbet visited Broome as a guest of Australia's North West tourism.
