Dream country pub life
Dream country pub life

Quitting the city for a quiet life as a country publican is the stuff of downshifters' dreams - and, for Krystle and Benjamin Jones, it's a dream come true. The couple bought the Shark Bay Hotel in Denham late last year with Benjamin's parents, Shane and Kerry, moving to the Mid West town to run the "Old Pub", as it is known locally.

"Shane, my father-in-law, has been coming up here for 37 years and my husband, Ben, has been coming up for 20 years and they both loved the Old Pub and watched it going downhill for the past 18 years," Krystle says.

Addressing the 14-page dossier of work orders required to repair the 1960s building has meant plenty of hard graft for the Jones family but the hotel has now been revamped, with a restaurant serving local seafood and budget accommodation priced at $110 a night.

Denham locals have reportedly been "so thankful that they've got their pub back" and feedback from visitors to the town has also been positive. "We're focused on making it a really good country pub with really good customer service," Krystle says.
