Terms & Conditions

By entering the 2015 Young Travel Photojournalist Contest (the competition) you are agreeing to the following terms and conditions:

Instructions on how to enter, prize details and other information contained within the promotional advertisements form part of these terms and conditions. By participating in this competition entrants agree to be bound by these terms and conditions.

The Promoter is West Australian Newspapers Limited of 50 Hasler Road, Osborne Park, WA 6017 [ABN 98 008 667 632].

The Promoter is not responsible for any data or other information related to this program that may be lost, damaged as a result of any computer software or hardware malfunction. Any issues occurring as a result of computer problems will be rectified as quickly as possible.

All entrants release from, and indemnify the Promoter against all liability, cost, loss or expense arising out of acceptance of any prize(s) or participation in the competition including (but not limited to) loss of income, personal injury and damage to property and whether direct or consequential, foreseeable, due to some negligent act or omission or otherwise.

The prizes are subject to the standard terms and conditions of the individual prize and service providers.

The Promoters may, subject to State Regulations, terminate this competition at any time at its absolute discretion without liability to any contestant or other person.

Personal details will be used for Young Travel Writer contest notifications only. Details will not be collected for marketing purposes. All personal details will be treated in accordance with the Australian Privacy Act.

Meals, travel insurance and other travel costs are covered by the Promoters. Only a small amount of money should be taken on assignment by winners for personal items.

Send your own original 300 — 400 word story about your local, interstate or overseas travel experience or destination. Include a title for your story, e.g. The Point of the Pinnacles.

Attach as two separate jpeg files your own original photographs of the destination. They should be sent as jpeg files of at least 500KB.

Write a caption for each photograph in your email to youngtravelwriter@thewest.com.au

Judging will be between complete and the 10 finalists informed by email or phone between Tuesday, March 10, and Friday, March 13. The judges’ decision is final.

The contest is open to students in WA schools, years 8 to 12. Entrants must live in WA. The assignment starts and ends at Perth Domestic Airport.

Include your name, address, age, a daytime phone number and email address.

If you are taking part as part of school activities, include your year level, school, teacher’s name, and school phone number.

Entries must be by individuals. (No joint entries.)

You may submit a maximum of two different entries.

Written article and photographs must be the entrant’s own original work.

Do not send attachments as PDF documents.

Materials cannot be returned.

The judges’ decision is final.

Entrants should be confident swimmers in mask, snorkel and fins, but will be carefully supervised and assisted.

10 FINALISTS WILL EACH RECEIVE

A Canon PowerShot SX60 HS digital compact camera, thanks to Camera Electronic and Canon Australia.

Spend a morning at Kings Park and Botanic Gardens with The West’s award-winning Travel editor, Stephen Scourfield, learning more about travel writing and photography (and being presented with their cameras).

TWO OVERALL YOUNG TRAVEL WRITER WINNERS

Will then be invited on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go ‘on assignment’ with our Travel editor and a chaperone to the Ningaloo Reef to swim with whale sharks, staying in Exmouth and exploring North West Cape, thanks to Australia’s Coral Coast tourism.
