Golden spiral inspires Bali villa
Golden spiral inspires Bali villa

Designed according to the principles of one of nature's greatest mysteries, the Fibonacci golden spiral, Villa Pererepan is the latest addition to the Awang Awang Villas which sit on the edge of a river ravine 5km from the centre of Ubud.

The villa's design and construction grew from the Australian owner's desire to build a luxury dwelling using natural materials which would blend with its rainforest setting and have minimal impact on the environment.

Beneath rising bamboo arches, the eco villa's spacious open-plan living and sleeping area can be opened up on two sides to enable guests to experience the sights and sounds of the surrounding rainforest and the thundering river below. While screens provide protection from the inevitable mosquitos, guests are advised for the need to be "creature friendly" as an occasional visit from a gecko, firefly or frog can be expected.

A traditional carved Balinese door leads into a semi-open bathroom which features a free-form stone bath, a rain shower and a carved mural inspired by one of Bali's most famous artists, Miguel Covarrubias. A private pagoda and plunge pool are located outside on a wooden deck.

As far as possible all natural materials have been used, not only for the building, but also for the furnishings. The king size bed has a natural latex mattress and the bed linen and towels are made from soft organic bamboo. Power is supplied by solar panels and the pool is sanitised without the use of harsh chemicals.

Named by the local Hindu priest, Villa Pererepan means "a beautiful place to stay" and if you find it hard to drag yourself away from its heavenly allure, a chef is on hand to prepare meals and a villa masseuse can provide a wide range of massage and spa treatments at a very reasonable cost.

Rates begin at $US175 per day and include accommodation, airport pickup, daily breakfast and a shuttle to and from Ubud three times a day.
