Low scores but exciting finishes in amateurs

It wasn’t pretty but some WA Amateur Football League teams in the top two grades had stirring wins in close games last Saturday.

On a damp day, only one A Grade team, University, scored 10 goals or more. Uni had a thumping 83-point win at home over hapless Mt Lawley, 16.11 to 3.6.

North Beach had a morale-boosting one-point win at home over North Fremantle in a war of attrition - 4.9 to 4.8.

Fremantle CBC were able to win kicking only five goals. Although inaccurate, second-placed CBC won 5.17 to West Coast’s 7.3. West Coast stay fourth on the ladder with a 4-2 record.

Trinity Aquinas maintained top spot with a comfortable 9.14 to 5.1 win at home over Kalamunda, and third-placed Kelmscott confirmed their finals credentials by beating last year’s runners-up Wesley Curtin 7.14 to 6.8.

In B Grade, top team Swan Athletic suffered their first loss of the season, losing 4.16 to 10.12 to challenger Hamersley Carine, who didn’t quite grab top spot on percentage - they are 0.6 per cent behind.

Third-placed Wembley won at Maddington by 10 points (7.12 to 6.8), Kingsway had a one-point win over Collegians (8.7 to 7.12), Scarborough recovered from a scoreless first quarter to beat Whitford by two points (7.8 to 7.6), and Wanneroo shook off Stirling only in the last quarter to win 11.16 to 7.11.

Though it was hard going for the teams, there were some excellent individual performances in front of goal.

In A Grade, Ryan Murphy took his season’s tally to 25 with seven out of Trinity Aquinas’ nine goals, University’s Ben Taylor slotted six goals and Kelmscott’s Brett Eades nailed five of their seven.

In B Grade, Stephen Martin kicked six for Hamersley Carine to take his season total to 23, James Del Borrello stood out for Kingsway with five of their eight goals and former East Perth player Aaron Sweet scored four of Stirling’s seven.
