Subiaco win nothing to sing about

It’s not often that a team doesn’t sing the club song after winning a game.

But Subiaco players didn’t belt out the Lions’ theme tune after their 36-point win against Perth at Lathlain Park on Saturday.

Though happy to take the four premiership points which extended his side’s lead at the top of the ladder, Lions coach Jarrad Schofield said there was little to get enthused about in the 8.15 (63) to 3.9 (27) victory.

“That’s all we take out of it, four points,” Schofield said.

“I said to the boys afterwards, no need to sing the song. It wasn’t worthy of singing the song, I think that performance.”

Schofield said the decision by both teams to play numbers behind the ball had made for an untidy spectacle in his team’s fifth win for the season.

“We all had numbers behind the footy, there were numbers everywhere,” he said.

“Unfortunately for us, we had blokes going outside our structures, outside our process.

“In the end, when you do that you don’t get the effective result at the end of it like we have in previous weeks.

“To Perth’s credit they came with intensity with a mindset to be competitive.

“They drew the game into a certain way and the most disappointing thing for us we didn’t play our style or our structures.

“When teams can try and force you to play a certain way that’s well and good. But I was more disappointed that we had blokes playing like individuals today.”

Subiaco key forward Clancy Wheeler increased his chances of playing against South Australia at Lathlain Park on May 23 with a standout display. Wheeler, 27, had 27 possessions, 13 marks, six inside 50s and a goal.

Aidan Tropiano, Perth’s only player in the 36-man Black Swans squad named last week, was one of his team’s best players along with full-back Chris Billimgs.

Subiaco’s defence played a major role, Perth’s second goal not coming until the eight-minute mark of the final quarter.

Full-back Darren Rumble, captain in the absence of injured playmaker Kyal Horsley, led the way with support from Jordan Lockyer, Charles Le Fanu, Scott Worthington and Aaron Heal.
