Perth have implored their fans to support the embattled club rather than blame new coach Earl Spalding after an embarrassing start to the season.

Chief executive Marty Atkins posted a statement on the club’s official Facebook page yesterday backing the 1995 Carlton premiership forward after supporters used social media to vent their anger following the team’s 96-point thrashing from Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday.

The heavy defeat has directed the spotlight on Perth as they prepare to host South Fremantle at Lathlain Park on Saturday.

The fixture will be the second match broadcast this season by Channel 7, which is part of Seven West Media withThe West Australian .

In the statement, Atkins addressed fan concerns over Spalding’s comments at last Wednesday’s season launch, saying his remarks had been “jovial”.

Spalding joked the Demons would be a chance of making the finals this year if the WAFL introduced a top-eight system.

“Saturday was not a good day for the club, but let’s not start pointing the finger and laying blame on individuals,” Perth’s statement said. “As a club we are in this together.”

Perth’s Matthew Welburn can accept a one-match ban for a high hit on Swan Aaron Elari during Saturday’s match.
