Blackwell sets up Tigers upset
Luke Blackwell.

Claremont centreman Luke Blackwell led the way when Claremont held firm to beat Swan Districts by 26 points at Steel Blue Oval today.

Blackwell shook off a number of opponents to finish with 28 possessions, 11 clearances and three inside 50s in his team’s 15.7 (97) to 11.5 (71) upset victory.

Swans, who missed a golden opportunity to move to the top of the WAFL premiership ladder, were playing catch-up football throughout.

The Tigers had three of the first four goals of the match, able to rebound the ball out of defence with ease.

Ruckman Mark Seaby was giving Claremont midfielders first use of the ball, with Blackwell, Ryan Neates, Matt Orzel, Ben Daniher and Hugo Breakey cashing in to give the Tigers a 12-point lead at quarter time.

Swans played with a lot more purpose in the second term but Claremont held the home team at bay, able to extend their lead to 19 points at half time.

The game developed into an arm wrestle in the third stanza, with neither team able to break free.

Davis kicked an early goal for Swans with Brenden Abbott finishing accurately soon after for Claremont to restore the visitors’ lead to 19 points.

Swan Districts had control of the ball for the next 10 minutes but it was Claremont who broke the deadlock when Mitchell McGovern booted the 10th goal for the visitors.

The hard-tackling Tigers had a 23-point lead at three-quarter time and absorbed Swans kicking the first two goals of the last quarter to clinch their fourth win of the season.

Swans won both minor grades, taking out the reserves by 45 points and colts by 56 points.

Jacob Burnham and Levi Ridley played impressively in the reserves for Swans, while ruckman Darcy Cameron was terrific for the Tigers.

Burnham had 33 possessions, 13 marks, five tackles and one inside 50 while Ridley had 32 possessions, six marks, six inside 50s and kicked two goals.

Cameron had 18 possessions, nine marks and 33 hit-outs to signal a return to the league side isn’t far away.

The 18-year-old North Albany recruit made way in the Claremont side today for dual premiership ruckman Mitch Andrews.
