Lions shine in Goldfields

Shaun Hildebrandt.

Subiaco overcame to determined Perth outfit to cement their spot in the top four, with a 14.19 (103) to 11.5 (71) triumph in today’s WAFL match at Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s Sir Richard Moore Sports Centre.

The Lions controlled the match for long periods, but kept their rivals within striking distance with poor goalkicking.

A four goal to one last term secured the Lions’ eight victory of the year as Christopher Deluca and Subiaco captain Kyal Horsley were influential while George Hampson snared four goals.

Subiaco dominated the opening term, but failed to make the most of their supremacy, kicking a wasteful 3.8.

Perth had to wait more than 14 minutes to trouble the scorers, returning ruckman Mitchell Leyendekkers bagging their first major in the 15th minute before Gerald Ugle’s goal further closed the margin.

The Demons closed margin in the second term as Jarryd Morton provided plenty of run off the half-back line, nullifying numerous Subiaco forward forays.

Perth’s workmanlike approach helped stall Subiaco’s ball movement as two goals to Cale Morton reduced the Lions’ buffer to nine at the long break.

Subiaco looked like blowing the game open in the third, back-to-back goals to Rhett Kerr, pushing the margin to 22 points.

But Perth’s open forward line continued to provide headaches for the Lions, the Demons refusing to lay down as a the contest turned into an arm-wrestle.

A sensational goal out of mid-air from Perth captain Paul Bevan just before the three-quarter time break, keeping Perth within striking distance at 11 points.
