Wesley Curtin defence in order

Wesley Curtin got their premiership defence off to an impressive start when they beat Trinity Aquinas by 48 points in the first round of WA amateur football on Saturday.

Playing at Trinity's home ground, Grayden Reserve, the reigning premiers' defence was in good order, allowing their opponents to score only 4.7 (31) while the Tigers amassed 11.13 (79) at the other end.

Newly promoted Kalamunda had a tough first day in A Grade, going down to West Coast Cowan by 21 points at City Beach Oval.

Mt Lawley and North Beach signalled they might be in for good seasons with high-scoring home wins.

Former Swan Districts player Adam McKinlay kicked four goals for Mt Lawley.

North Beach trailed Swan Athletic by three points at half-time but the home team careered away in the third term, kicking 8.2 to no score.

B Grade had the nail-biting games, with three contests decided by seven points or less.

Demoted Collegians had a first-up win, by five goals, under new coach Byron Schammer. Collegians trailed at Willetton by a point at three-quarter time but kicked six goals to one in the final term.

The league has a bye this week for Easter.
