Tiger takes home WAFL award
Tiger takes home WAFL award

Hard-running midfielder Kane Mitchell has continued Claremont's great player success by winning The West Australian WAFL Player of the Year award.

Mitchell was presented with his prize at a major WA football breakfast in the city this morning shortly before Matthew Pavlich was named AFL Player of the Year.

And Swan Districts teenager Dayle Garlett has won the WAFL Rising Star Award.

The Tigers have a strong relationship with the local league award with Mitchell becoming the fourth Tiger in seven years to claim the $5000 prize.

The 22-year-old won a thrilling battle with East Perth ruckman Paul Johnson over the final rounds when votes went in camera.

A five-vote haul by Mitchell in Claremont's clash with Subiaco last Saturday carried Mitchell's tally to 43 votes, one more than Johnson, who didn't poll a vote in round 24.

Claremont's Luke Blackwell, who won the award last season, was third with 38 votes. Another Sandover medallist, Ross Young from Perth, was fourth on 35.

Mitchell has enjoyed an outstanding couple of years in the WAFL that has also included State representation this season. He was also a member of Claremont's premiership team in 2011 and will be a key part of the Tigers' quest for another flag later this month.

The WAFL Rising Star award is based on the votes of seasoned league watchers Russell Reid, Peter Spencer and Phil Lamb.

Garlett polled 10 votes to pip West Perth's Shane Nelson (nine votes) and collect the $2000 prize. East Fremantle duo Sean Henson and Max Duffy were equal third on seven votes.
