Samantha Stosur’s nightmare start to 2013 has gone to another level after she lost to China’s Jie Zheng at the Australian Open today.
Having lost first round matches in Brisbane and Sydney, including one to Zheng, the Australian fought back from a set down and had two chances to serve out the match but is now eliminated from the tournament.
Stosur lost the match 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 despite having total control at one stage in the third set.
The US Open champion’s game was filled with inconsistency. She displayed amazing power and skill but mixed it with ground strokes and serves which hit the racquet frame and ricocheted out of court.
Stosur led 5-2 in the final set but suffered the heartbreaking loss when she served her ninth double fault when Zheng had match point.
