Foreign names on Glory list

Perth Glory have several foreign candidates on their six-man coaching short list, but are wary of being blinded by the bright lights of an international appointment.

The short list will be narrowed to two candidates by tomorrow, with a final decision to be made within a fortnight.

Chief executive Jason Brewer said incumbent Kenny Lowe was still a chance to move into the role permanently next season.

But Lowe appears an unlikely appointment after presiding over a 10-game winless run heading into tomorrow's clash with Newcastle Jets at nib Stadium.

Glory have slipped to last place since Lowe took over when Alistair Edwards was sacked in December. The club is in danger of collecting the first wooden spoon in its 18-year history.

But Brewer said he and Glory hierarchy weren't looking for a quick fix to the club's issues and were cautious about the temptation to appoint a big-name overseas coach.

"I think what as a club we've got to make sure we don't get dragged into is the current euphoria over foreign coaches and what they can bring," Brewer said.

"I think we've got to be careful of that. A lot of people are referring to Josep Gombau and what he's done at Adelaide, which has been fantastic, but let's not forget the press were all over him after the first six matches."

Brewer said local knowledge would be taken into account when the club's advisory board made its decision on a coach.

"You can get some great foreign coaches or you can get a good Australian coach," Brewer said.

"My view is the risk associated with bringing a foreign coach in means that he's got to be twice as good as a local coach because he's not going to have that knowledge of the A-League and local players.

"He's got to adapt to how the league works and the little intricacies of our league."

Glory are likely to finalise the sale of teen prodigy Daniel De Silva to Italian Serie A giants AS Roma next week.

De Silva and his father are due to return to Perth today after spending the week in Europe discussing terms with the club.

The deal would involve De Silva being loaned back to Glory until the end of next season and is likely to break the A-League transfer record of $1.3 million, set when Rostyn Griffiths left Central Coast for Chinese club Guangzhou R&F in 2012.
