Perth Glory striker Billy Mehmet is on his way to Thailand after seeking a release from the A-League club.

Glory coach Ian Ferguson said there were still some parts of the deal to be finalised, but Mehmet is all but certain to leave for Bangkok Glass FC.

“It looks as though Billy could be leaving us,” Ferguson said.

“I can’t guarantee anybody any first-team place. Billy wanted first-team football and I can’t guarantee him that. He’s 28 and he wants to be playing regularly.

“It’s disappointing but, look, we don’t want unhappy players here either. He’s unhappy and he’s not playing and he wants to move.

“I think we’ve said it (before), we won’t stand in anybody’s way to go overseas and he’s got that opportunity.”

London-born Mehmet joined Glory in September 2011 and played 42 games for the club, scoring 10 goals.

A former youth player at West Ham United, the Republic of Ireland Under-21 international played in Scotland and Turkey before heading Down Under.

Ferguson confirmed he would look to bring in reinforcements from overseas with Mehmet’s departure opening up an international spot in the squad.

Glory striker Shane Smeltz completed this morning’s training session and looks set to play against Sydney FC at nib Stadium tomorrow night despite hurting his groin yesterday.

Ferguson this week backed marquee man Smeltz to rekindle his goal scoring touch after finding the net just twice so far this season.
