Beckham still has tricks for Glory
Beckham still has tricks for Glory

Some of his rival coaches are sceptical, but Perth Glory boss Ian Ferguson is in no doubt as to what sort of value David Beckham could be to his club and the A-League competition.

Glory are in the process of putting together a $2 million package for Beckham and have submitted and offer through agent Lou Sticca, who is liaising with former England captain’s management.

Beckham has spent the last six years at LA Galaxy and played a major role in enhancing the profile of soccer in the United States, but announced he would leave the club after the MLS Cup final next month.

Several A-League clubs have indicated their interest in Beckham and Melbourne Heart have tabled an offer worth $1.7million for a 10-game guest stint.

Ferguson said there would be no point bringing older players to Australia to parade in front of the fans if they were only here for a holiday.

But he pointed to the impact of Sydney FC star Alessandro Del Piero this season as a sign of what could be achieved if the right players were recruited.

“These players are class players and if we can bring them in when they’re still playing at the top of their game and players learn from them then I would say it’s a massive tick for the A-League,” Ferguson said.

Glory have been installed amongst the favourites with major betting agencies to land Beckham’s signature, but will face stiff competition from clubs around the world.

“It’s great for the club and if we can get ‘Becks’ here it would be phenomenal for the club itself and Perth,” Ferguson said.
“It would be a fantastic coup for Australian football. He is a fantastic player and he’s still playing at a very high level.

“From what I’ve seen over the last two or three years from ‘Becks’, he just maintains what he’s doing. That’s what you want to bring to the A-League is that sort of quality.”

Glory expect to be given an indication of Beckham’s intentions by the end of the week and are hopeful of sitting down with the player’s management next month.
