Socceroos defender Michael Thwaite has signed a two-year deal with Perth Glory.
The club confirmed today the 29-year-old would make the switch to WA where he will join his former Gold Coast United teammates Shane Smeltz, Bas van den Brink and Steve Pantelidis.
Glory coach Ian Ferguson was delighted to secure the central defender.
“It’s a fantastic coup to bring a quality player like Michael across to Western Australia,” Ferguson said.
“He’s very comfortable in possession, he can switch the play, breaks the lines (and) also can drive through the middle.
“Michael has been one of the league’s better players for the last three seasons.”
Thwaite has made six appearances for the Socceroos and has a vast resume, which includes spells in Romania, Norway and Poland, where he played alongside Glory skipper Jacob Burns at Wisla Krakow.
Gold Coast folded at the end of last season when owner Clive Palmer had his licence revoked.
“I’m relieved to finally know where I am heading,” Thwaite said.
“Within the Perth Glory squad I have previously played with eight or so of the boys and that was a big factor in my decision.
“I also spent two years together with the captain Jacob in Poland, so it’s nice to have these combinations.”
