Im Themightyquinn brilliantly won his third straight $400,000 SEW Eurodrive WA Pacing Cup (2536m) at Gloucester Park last night and trainer Gary Hall Sr is confident the supreme gelding has set the scene for a $1 million double in the next two months.
Hall said his champion, not fully extended in the 4m win, would start in next Friday's $250,000 Fremantle Cup (2936m) and then head east to the $750,000 Sydney Inter Dominion Championship (2300m) on March 3.
Im Themightyquinn, a winner at 19 of his past 20 Gloucester Park starts, last night boosted his earnings to almost $3.7 million.
A win in the Sydney Inters would lift him above Blacks A Fake as the world's richest stake-earning pacer.
Hall's reinsman son Gary Jr settled Im Themightyquinn in 10th position when he started odds-on favourite in the 100th anniversary of the WA Pacing Cup.
Im Themightyquinn moved three-wide to fifth at the bell, then accelerated four-wide at the 400m post.
He charged past pacemaker Dasher VC on the home turn and was eased as outsider Crombie emerged to lead the chase.
Hall Sr has trained a record seven WA Pacing Cup winners and Hall Jr has driven six of the cup's winners.
Last night's victory gave Hall Jr an Australian driving record in elite-level races.
He has driven 20 Grand Circuit winners, after sharing the record of 19 wins with the retired Brian Hancock.
"I knew in the preliminary that he felt at his best again tonight," Hall Jr said.
"He's been getting beaten in the Eastern States and he has doubters there. I can't wait to get to Sydney and show them that he can beat the best anywhere in Australia."
Hall Sr said it was feasible eight-year-old Im Themightyquinn, who has won 45 races from 92 starts, could go on to become the most prolific winner in WA Pacing Cup history.
Great pacers Pure Steel and Village Kid share the cup record with four wins each.
Bunbury gelding Son Of Fergie won last night's SEW Eurodrive WA Pacing Cup Consolation (2536m), storming home to beat front-running favourite Bakerandthefatman by 1m.
Hokonui Ben displayed outstanding potential by blitzing rivals in the $50,000 SEW Eurodrive Nights Of Thunder Final (1730m).
