Life in fast lane tough for sisters

Cate and Bronte Campbell have such a dislike for beating each other they won't look for each other in the water during races.

So despite their tight finish in the 100m freestyle final at Glasgow 2014 the sisters had no idea of their sibling's progress because they breathed on opposite sides despite being in adjoining lanes.

The results chart lists a win for Cate, 22, in 52.68sec.

Her 20-year-old sister took Commonwealth Games silver with 52.86. Compatriot Emma McKeon (53.61) gave Australia a trifecta in the race.

The gap is quickly closing between two of the world's best sprinters. But while the younger Campbell might aspire to get better - and she proved that potential at this meeting - she won't take any satisfaction from catching, and passing, her housemate.

"I don't want to strike Cate's name off any list," Bronte said.

"It is hard. She is my favourite older sister. It is great to race Cate but I don't make it my goal to beat her … coming second to Cate is like a win for me.

"I'm not going to set out to beat anyone. It might sound stupid but I don't enter a race to win. I enter a race because I love racing. I love standing up behind the blocks and I love that moment just before you dive in and it all goes quiet, you take a deep breath and just go.

"Then you try to win. But that moment just before you go is why I race. Not to beat Cate, not to beat Emma."

Cate does enjoy the challenge presented by her sister. The pair relish their duels in the Brisbane pool under the guidance of coach Simon Cusack.

Bronte set the Commonwealth Games record for the 100m free-style as the lead-off swimmer in Australia's world record relay effort on day one of the competition.

Yet Cate lowered the mark in Monday night's individual final.

"I hope she values our friendship and our relationship not to hold a grudge against me. It certainly seems that way," Cate said.

"And I hope if the tables are ever turned that I would be as considerate, as generous and as loving as she is.

"It might be tough because coming through the ranks she was never Bronte Campbell but she was Cate Campbell's sister. I really felt for her.

"For her to overcome that, step out of the shadow and be her own person is an incredible achievement and something I'm fiercely proud of her for doing. It couldn't have been easy."
