Kookaburras pass first Games test

Australia’s men’s hockey team finally got the tough match it had keenly sought in Glasgow.

After comfortable wins over Wales (7-1) and South Africa (6-0) in the preliminary rounds, India challenged the world champions in the third of four pool fixtures in the Commonwealth Games tournament.

Consecutive goals on either side of half-team gave the Indians, coach by Australian hockey great Terry Walsh, a chance of victory.

But a penalty stroke opportunity was converted by flick specialist Chris Ciriello to seal the 4-2 win for the Kookaburras.

It was Ciriello’s second goal of the match and his fourth from the three clashes.

Jacob Whetton and Simon Orchard, who like Ciriello started the match on the interchange, also scored for the Australians.

The Kookaburras will play Scotland in their final Pool A match on Thursday.
