Coles claims WA's first Games gold

Shooter Laura Coles has provided WA with its first gold medal at Glasgow 2014 with victory in the women's skeet at Carnoustie.

Coles was the leading qualifier for the even with 70 clay targets hit from her 75 shots. She was only one shy of the Commonwealth Games record set by teammate Lauren Mark in Manchester 12 years ago.

And she continued the good form in the final, defeating Wales' Elena Allen 14-13

Coles, 27, has made a steady rise in shooting after taking up the sport 12 years ago when she was given a shotgun by her grandfather.

She has a world ranking of 28 but showed her potential in the Commonwealth category by winning the Oceania championships last year.
