Recalled WA paceman Ryan Duffield got WA off to a fine start in the Sheffield Shield match with Tasmania at the WACA Ground today.

Duffield took two early wickets and had 2-8 off eight overs at lunch, when Tasmania had battled to 3-68.

Opening batsmen Mark Cosgrove and Ben Dunk struggled to cope with Duffield's fast-medium left-armers. Left-hander Cosgrove, usually a free-scoring batsman, was bowled for one off 21 balls, and Dunk was caught behind for four off 27 balls.

But Alex Doolan and Ricky Ponting were more comfortable, putting on 43 before Doolan (33 with seven fours) was bowled by former NSW fast bowler and WA debutant Burt Cockley (1-29 off 12 overs).

Ominously, Ponting was on 25 at lunch and setting himself for a big score. George Bailey had joined him upon Doolan's dismissal.

Spinner Ashton Agar bowled three overs for 11 runs.
