Bosisto follows hero Hussey
Bosisto follows hero Hussey

Australian under-19 captain Will Bosisto grew up idolising Mike Hussey and will attempt to employ his hero's industrious methods when making his senior State debut today.

"My role batting in the middle order is to be really busy," Bosisto said on the eve of his one-day debut, against Victoria at the WACA Ground.

"The same in the field. I will be a busy cricketer, attempt to rotate the strike and if I get a bad ball put it away.

"When I was a youngster Mike Hussey was a big idol of mine when he played for 10 years for WA.

"It's a big ask but I thought it would be great to follow in his footsteps."

Bosisto's elevation is the product of WA's decision to invest in youth in a bid to overcome the mediocrity of the past decade.

A week after 20-year-old Sam Whiteman made a composed debut against NSW, 19-year-old Bosisto will replace Adam Voges in the one-day team to take on the Bushrangers.

And Whiteman will make his Sheffield Shield debut on Sunday if Voges does not recover from the spinal disc injury that restricted him last week.

Young paceman Jason Behrendorff is also on stand-by should experienced quicks Nathan Rimmington (hamstring) and Michael Hogan (side) fail fitness tests this morning.

WA coach Lachlan Stevens was adamant that the Warriors had to build stronger foundations rather than top-up shaky teams with interstate imports seeking a final contract at the end of their careers.

"This is a great moment for WA cricket," Stevens said.

"This sends a message to young players that if you do well you will get opportunities."

Bosisto, who was the player of the tournament at the under-19 World Cup last month where he was dismissed just once in scoring 276 runs, will bat at No.5 against Victoria.

Whiteman will bat at No.3 and could be required to combat Test speedsters Peter Siddle and James Pattinson and ex-England paceman Darren Pattinson.

"It is hard on Sam to be thrown in at No.3 but circumstances dictate that," Stevens said.
