Perth Wildcats guard Damian Martin has been promoted to co-captain alongside existing leader Shawn Redhage.

Martin, 27, replaces Brad Robbins in the leadership role after his former back-court partner announced his retirement last month.

Martin has been groomed as a leader since following coach Rob Beveridge to Perth from Sydney Spirit in 2009.

He has been a major part of the club’s success in recent years, occupying the position of starting point-guard throughout his time with the Wildcats.

Robbins last month named Martin, American import Kevin Lisch and Wanneroo product Greg Hire as potential leaders of the club.

“To be able to lead this club means the world to me. I don’t like to focus too much on individual recognition but this does have a lot of personal meaning, and I hope I can do what’s right by the club and by my teammates on and off the court,” he said.

“I’m 28 years old now, I’ve known Rob Beveridge since I was 15, I know what he expects within the group, and I think it was just a coming of age thing for me, it’s time for me to step up and be accountable as far as leadership goes, and to be rewarded with co-captaincy means everything.”

Martin has played 136 NBL games, averaging 7.3 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.9 steals a game.

He was named the NBL’s Defensive Player of the Year for 2011/12 is contracted to the club until the end of next season.

“He has an enormous amount of experience, his work ethic on and off the court is just tremendous and when he speaks everybody listens, he has an air of authority about him. He’s a natural born leader,” Beveridge said.

“He’s the engine room of our team, he sets the tone, when Damo plays well we win, and I think he is just so well respectedfrom the effort that he puts in.

“I’ve known him for 13 years, and one of the great things to witness as a coach is a young man growing into a tremendous leader.”
