Mundy’s tough summer pays off

David Mundy believes his start to the season is the best of his career and credits an aggressive brand of football as the key to Fremantle’s midfield dominance.

The 29-year-old gave the glowing assessment of his own form as second-year forward Michael Apeness was ruled out for up to 12 weeks with a knee injury.

Apeness, 20, damaged a posterior cruciate ligament after falling awkwardly in a marking contest playing for Peel Thunder against Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval last Saturday.

Mundy has been a stellar contributor in Fremantle’s unbeaten start to the year, his own form overshadowed by Brownlow Medal favourite Nat Fyfe’s blistering first five games.

Mundy, still searching for his first All-Australian jumper, is averaging a career-high 28 disposals and seven clearances in 2015.

He said there was no great secret to his form.“It’s just a lot of hard work over the summer months,” he said.

“Physically it’s put me in the right frame to play well and I think our entire midfield group this year, their mental approach to games has been first-class.

“We’re playing really aggressive, instinctive football and I think that’s really paying off for us.

“I’ve been very happy with my personal approach and mindset going into games ... (but) I’m understanding that it could be a fleeting thing.

“There are 18 more rounds to go. I’m still trying to work hard and keep that edge.”
