Cometti: I was barking to dump Dogs

Before the season I wrote a scathing, well-intentioned article about the Western Bulldogs.

Is that possible? To do both I mean.

I admit I have a soft spot for the Dogs but what they're doing at the moment is as remarkable as it is unexpected.

Time, I think, to renew my membership. That's if they'll have me back.

Let me hasten to add I'm a member of four or five clubs but after all the off season turmoil I decided I could do with one fewer.

Turns out that that was not only mean spirited but dumb.

Having lost players like Griffen, Cooney, Jones (all cleared), Giansiracusa (retired) and, more recently Liberatore, Morris and Wallis (all injured), I'm stunned with their achievements.

Saturday's slogging win over Sydney was proof the club knew what it was doing all along.

And although I did say in that ill-fated article "I loved their youngsters", I clearly didn't realise how good they were, or how well they would be coached.

On reflection, it was a tough week.

It started when I went to see West Perth and Swans last Monday and left 10 minutes before the final siren.

When I got in the car the Falcons were four goals behind. Instead of the radio I decided to listen to some soothing Jackson Browne on the freeway ride out of Joondalup.

At home, I quickly told my wife Velia that Swans had won.

Suffice it to say she was surprised to learn otherwise while watching the news an hour later.

Five goals in five minutes ... apparently.

Thank goodness she's a trusting woman!
