WA recruits in frame to confront Richmond

Carlton are considering unleashing WA draftees Blaine Boekhorst and Clem Smith on the big stage in Thursday night’s blockbuster against Richmond at the MCG.

A crowd in excess of 80,000 is expected, setting a huge platform for the possible debuts of the two recruits.

Boekhorst and Smith could line up alongside gun midfielder Bryce Gibbs, who looks set to play after overcoming a shoulder injury sustained during Carlton’s NAB Challenge match against Collingwood on March 15.

Swan Districts product Boekhorst, the 19th player taken in last year’s national draft, impressed Carlton during the pre-season with his vision and awareness, while Perth recruit Smith (pick 60) has established a reputation as a tough nut.

“You can tell they’ve both got a really mature head on their shoulders,” Carlton midfielder Andrew Carrazzo said.

“I know they’re right in the mix for selection this week. It’s going to be exciting to see those guys out there. I know the supporters want to see them.”
