Amateur heavies make statements

Finals-bound A Grade teams flexed their muscles in WA Amateur football on Saturday.

Top team Fremantle CBC, Wesley Curtin (second), University (third) and Trinity Aquinas (fifth) had big wins with three rounds left before the finals.

CBC took their surprise loss the previous week to Kalamunda out on lowly Whitford, thumping the northern suburbs team by 101 points.

They had 12 goal kickers, the best being three to former South Fremantle forward Jarrad Winter.

Trinity trumped that, belting bottom team Swan Athletic at home by 102 points. TAs had 11 goal kickers, including three each to former WAFL players David Crawford and Rhett Kerr.

University seem to have got back into top gear after a mid-season slump and severely dented Mt Lawley's final aspirations to the tune of 91 points.

Wesley Curtin's winning margin over Kalamunda wasn't so big but it was an important psychological blow as finals loom.

West Coast's Brad Bennet kicked six goals in his team's surprise win over North Beach at City Beach.

The heavies in B Grade didn't fare so well, top team North Fremantle succumbing to seventh-placed Maddington and Scarborough having a shocker at home against second-bottom Bull Creek Leeming. Wembley regained second place, from Scarborough, with a big win over Willetton.

In the top-of-the-table clash in C1 Grade, home team Kingsway took until the last quarter to shrug off Stirling to avenge their round-seven loss to the Saints - their only blemish for the season - and stay clear on top of the ladder. Kingsway won by 21 points, 12.8 to 8.11, after scores were level at three-quarter time. It was a spirited match and both teams had discipline problems - the umpires dished out many 50m penalties.
