A funny thing happened between main course and dessert on Saturday night.
My wife and I were out with a savvy football couple in one of our favourite Melbourne eateries when the waiter mentioned that Brisbane had upset North Melbourne.
The topic quickly became whether the Lions had "done it for Jonathan Brown"?
The girls loved the idea.
My mate Barry, a fine footballer in his own right, and I were more sceptical.
Our argument was based on the assumption that almost every player at the top level gives everything every week, so how could they give more?
Seems we didn't convince anyone, including the waiter!
On reflection, I conceded that maybe there is something about being able to find a fraction more for a special occasion.
I do believe that an almost pre-ordained few players are programmed to play below their best on any given day.
Maybe the buzz around a club in the build-up for something as special as Jonathan Brown's farewell changes that and guys, who for whatever reason were due a lesser game, get caught up in it.
Quite frankly that's about where I lost Barry.
We were divided.
Over cold coffee the girls claimed victory for the fairy tale.
In Brisbane it was the same result.
