New Eagle delayed by surgery

Young Eagle delayed by hip operation

West Coast recruit Tom Barrass has undergone surgery after a pre-season setback.

Taken with the 43rd selection in last November's national draft, Barrass had an operation last week to repair a tear in a hip joint.

The 18-year-old is not expected to return to full training until April, dashing any hopes of a NAB Challenge appearance or being ready for the start of the home-and-away season.

The Eagles have confirmed they will put Barrass on the club's long-term injury list.

The 192cm key defender was taken by the Eagles after impressing for WA during last year's under-18 championships.

Barrass' manager Wayne Smith said the hip issue had been affecting the youngster's maiden AFL pre-season and the operation had been a simple clean-up.

"The club look at him as a long-term prospect and just wanted to get it tidied up," Smith said.

"It wasn't a serious issue."

·Collingwood's bid to rebound quickly from a disappointing 2013 has been boosted by the availability of Clinton Young.

The former Hawthorn mid- fielder managed only two games in his first season with the Magpies last year because of hamstring injuries.

"I've really attacked the pre-season and things are going well for the season ahead," Young told Collingwood's website.
