Sharks lose big man for final

East Fremantle will enter their preliminary final with Swan Districts on Sunday without influential ruckman Jon Griffin, who has been ruled out with a hamstring complaint.

Griffin played an important role in the Sharks’ first semi-final win against East Perth last weekend after surprisingly being left out of the Fremantle travelling party for their elimination final against Geelong at the MCG.

Former Adelaide big man Griffin teamed with Rob Young to wear down leading Sandover Medal contender Paul Johnson in a battle which went a long way towards setting up the Sharks’ 37-point victory.

East Fremantle coach Steve Malaxos has a number of options to replace Griffin, including teenage draft prospect Cameron Symonds and tall utility player Russell Gabriel.

Swan Districts received good news during the week, with Ashley Hansen, Tallan Ames and Graham Jetta all escaping suspension after being reported for rough conduct in separate incidents.

The winner of Sunday’s preliminary final will earn the right to challenge reigning premiers Claremont in the grand final at Patersons Stadium on September 23.
