Melbourne's 2011 Best and Fairest Brent Moloney is the first player in the AFL to officially explore free agency after the club this afternoon confirmed he was leaving.
The 28-year-old midfielder is a restricted free agent, meaning the Demons are allowed to match any offer he receives, however a statement from the club indicated they would be happy to let him go.
“We respect Brent’s position, and the fact that he has been up front with us throughout the process," Melbourne coach Mark Neeld said.
"This is the new world of AFL Free Agency - Brent is a restricted free agent and the rules allow him to explore these opportunities. We wish him well for the future.”
Moloney had a disappointing year at the Demons with injury and poor form restricting him to only 15 games.
He managed 122 games for Melbourne since joining the club from Geelong in 2005.
