Matthews urges Freo to not win big
Matthews urges Freo to not win big

AFL great Leigh Matthews has urged Fremantle to win but not by too much so the Dockers can have an easier finals run.

Matthews, the pre-eminent special commentator in the game, almost suggested it would in the best interests of coach Ross Lyon if he could doctor the result of tomorrow's clash with Melbourne at Patersons Stadium.

"I know what I'd be doing if I was coach. I'd be trying to make sure we win by less than 10 goals," Matthews told

Matthews believed there was clear distinction between the sporting scourge of tanking and ensuring your victories didn't have an added cost.

It's not like trying to lose which is a different matter entirely. It's actually trying not to win by too much," he said.

"Surely you would prefer to play in Perth the following week against the Eagles than come to Melbourne and play Geelong or a team like that. Not travelling across the country would have to be a good thing," Matthews said.

"What it means that in that best case scenario, you have to travel for every week from now on. But if you can get one week at home to start I think you do it."

Fremantle have refused to look beyond the battle with Melbourne.

However, if results go their way in the final round, the Dockers could finish as high as sixth and get a home final.

But a seventh-place finish would force them on the road. Should West Coast lose they would likely fall to fifth and if the Dockers take eighth place, they would meet in the first derby final.
