Eagles give Newman a chance
Eagles give Newman a chance

West Coast coach John Worsfold said yesterday Murray Newman was close to an AFL debut.

Today he carried through with the claim by adding the forward to his team for Saturday's clash with Gold Coast at Patersons Stadium.

Newman was promoted while Tom Swift again became the Eagles yo-yo by being relegated from the 22.

The Eagles named Sam Butler, Stevens and Swift on their emergency list.

But West Coast didn't recall Adam Selwood after he was sidelined with an infected arm.

And the Eagles gave Will Schofield another week off with a hamstring injury, leaving Newman to rise to the top ranks.

Newman, 18, was pick 23 in the national draft. He has averaged 17 possessions and two goals in his last four games as a half-forward.

"His form stacks up over the last month," Worsfold said. "It's been very solid. It's as good as anyone in the WAFL."

The Suns lost Luke Russell (hamstring), Rory Thompson (ankle), Michael Rischitelli (hamstring) and Seb Tape (knee) to injury.

Jarrod Harbrow, Charlie Dixon, Matt Shaw and Steven May come into the team.
