Cigarette in cardboard box causes evacuation of Aussie Olympic Village in Rio

A fire caused by a cigarette has led to the evacuation of the Australian Olympic quarters in Rio.

A team spokesman said the team were cleared out of their building at the Olympic Village on Friday, due to a fire in the basement.

The fire caused no injuries and the team was back in the building after half an hour, the spokesman said.

The incident follows a week of tension at the Olympic Village, where Australia and several other teams complained about unfinished and dirty rooms before moving in.

Fire crews told 7 News the fire had started due to a cigarette being placed in a cardboard box.

It’s believed the fire was only small and set off smoke alarms.

It did not cause much damage to the building.

The fire comes only two days after the Australian team had officially moved into the building.
