Hill firming for new West Coast contract

Josh Hill’s future at West Coast beyond 2015 is all but assured, with the club flagging a contract extension for the lively forward.

The Eagles have been delighted with the 26-year-old’s form reversal this year.

Hill is West Coast’s second-leading goal kicker with 20 majors and has played a key role in their six-game winning streak.

His improved contribution has come on the back of better fitness and helped salvage a career that appeared on thin ice last year when he managed just nine matches. He earned a one-year extension last season.

However,'''' West Coast have already held discussions with Hill’s management about extending his stay beyond 2015.

In-depth contract negotiations are not expected to take place until after the round-13 bye.

It is likely Hill will get another 12-month deal, although he may request a two-year agreement if he can maintain his rich vein of form in the second half of the season.

The West Australian understands Eagles officials could lean towards a shorter playing deal, given some players are performing better in the final year of their contracts.

Like Hill, Sharrod Wellingham has similarly responded with his best form in the final year of a three-season contract.

The 2010 Collingwood premiership player is averaging 19 disposals and has established himself as an attacking defender.

Before last weekend’s AFL Indigenous Round, Hill said an honest conversation with coach Adam Simpson had been a catalyst for his turnaround.

“Just knowing that this is my last year I wanted to make an impact and build from that and show the club that I’m keen to stay and will do whatever it takes,” Hill said.
